About Helly Hansen For over 140 years, Helly Hansen has been crafting professional-grade gear to help people stay protected and alive. It all began in 1877 with sea captain Helly Juell Hansen and his wife Margrethe, who created waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou'westers, and tarpaulins made from linen soaked in linseed oil. Today, Helly Hansen gear is trusted by professionals on oceans, mountains, and worksites around the world. As the go-to brand for ski professionals, Helly Hansen is found in over 200 ski resorts and guiding operations globally, with more than 55,000 ski professionals wearing our gear. Our sailing gear is worn by world-class sailors on all five oceans, and we are proud partners of iconic regattas and sailing associations. We continue to honor Captain Hansen's legacy through groundbreaking innovations that have shaped the industry.
The Story of Helly Hansen In 1877, Captain Helly Juell Hansen set out to protect sailors from harsh Nordic weather by creating waterproof apparel using linseed oil-treated cotton canvas. This led to the production of oilskin jackets and pants, which garnered the brand its first award in 1878 at the World Expo in Paris. Over the years, Helly Hansen introduced revolutionary technologies such as Helox waterproof fabric in 1949, Fiberpile fleece in 1961, LIFA technical baselayers in 1970, Helly Tech waterproof fabric in 1984, and Prowool baselayers in 1990. The brand expanded into footwear in 2004, introduced the Odin 3-Layer System in 2008, H² Flow temperature regulating technology in 2012, the Magni line for workplace performance in 2015, the Elevation Jacket for freeride skiing in 2016, and the 140 Collection in commemoration of its 140th anniversary in 2017.
